International Day was a blast! The kids did a great job with their various ethnic dances, and I managed to get through the hula routine without too many noticeable flubs. The kids even yelled for me, and that was cute. I took some pics of the event, for posterity's sake.
Too bad someone stole my camera.
Time to write up a morning announcement offering a reward, and file a police report.
I believe the children are our future... |

they're building a building near the empire state that ruins the view of it from down my street. ate a MEATBALL banh mi from the place one block away from me, also called saigon... AND IT WAS SO GOOD. felt fat and lazy and computered all day long. johnny came over and we watched the fat one win 'america's next top model,' the vagina one lose 'american idol,' and one of the flame-headed ones lose 'top chef.' suddenly steampunk is everywhere? |

| Stand By The Jam |
[May. 15th, 2008|12:46 pm] |
Who wants to start a band like this:
Or this:
We probably only need three really good black female singers, a British guy, someone to just dance the entire time, and a DJ. Then, it's all about the entourage. Think about how many fools must have gotten up there to accept their American Music Award. (Not sure if Stereo MC's or Soul 2 Soul ever won anything, but still.) And although I'm perpetually lazy, I'm almost sure I could write all the lyrics. I'll just read a lot of books about metaphysics and space and we'll put it over a really wicked beat. Must be willing to wear an entire blue jean suit and/or three huge dreadlocks.
I'm sort of serious about this.
* Also serves as my Big Primpin' requests for tonight, JAY-SON! |

[May. 15th, 2008|06:36 am] |
Because I'm such a team player (or insane), I will be joining 5 or 6 other teachers this afternoon in doing a Hawaiian dance in front of the entire student body. We're having International Day today, and somehow I got suckered into this. Groups of kids will be doing various folk/ethnic dances, and it should be a fun time. Also, I will not be wearing coconuts or anything like that, so it should be even more of a fun time. I will have a "grass" skirt and some fake flowers, though.
(Insert "getting leied" joke here.) |

Tinky and I are watching American Idol.
Fantasia came on the stage and Tinkys says, "It looks like a mad turkey has entered the stage."
I loved the unidentified black male singer. I loved that. He's so ashamed by this songs that his pulled his hat down over his face.
Terrible. Just terrible. So bad it was worth a laugh. |

| | "Shaking Through," R.E.M. | ] | I survived turning 40, and the latest grey hairs in my beard and at my temples are a reminder that I turn 41 this month. So help me celebrate my birthday with a fun evening that will also raise money for a good cause.
Xtreem Aaron, texaninla and I are doing the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this year as The Walker Brothers. This September, we're walking 39 miles to raise money for breast cancer research and patient services, and in the meantime, we're fundraising. But we're getting some fun out of it as well.
Join us on Wednesday, May 21, at 9:00pm at Hamburger Mary's (8288 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood), when the Walker Brothers will be the beneficiary of the weekly charity Legendary Bingo game. For a suggested donation of $20, you'll get to play ten regular Bingo cards (for the first nine games) and two more cards for the Grand Prize Game, and the winner of each game gets a gift bag stuffed to the brim with super-cool DVDs, CDs, shirts, and other fab prizes. The Grand Prize winner also gets special gifts from Euphoria Face & Body, Amoeba Records, and other awesome swag. (And the first 30 attendees through the door win a free gift!)
Thanks to the generosity of our friends (with a big tip o' the hat to rexsteed), we'll also have five *live auctions* during the evening, featuring such goodies as valuable Disney artwork (including limited-edition, hand-painted cels); unique memorabilia from HEROES, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE and other cool TV shows; and an outgoing voice-mail message from brilliant comedian Deven Green, doing her world-famous impersonation of Brenda "Welcome to My Home" Dickson! Bring your checkbook and get ready to bid aggressively.
We'll have celebrity ball-caller Kevin Smith, HM's extensive array of cocktails, and much, much more. I don't want any birthday presents this year -- just come and play Bingo and bid on our awesome auction packages, and help the Walker Brothers to meet our goal for this year's Avon Walk.
Yes, it's the same night as the finale of that competitive singing show, but do you honestly care which David wins? Come have fun with us in WeHo!
P.S. If you're an otherwise-occupied Angeleno or anyone else who can't make it that night, you can still make a donation to any or all of the Walker Brothers: Please visit our team page. |

[May. 14th, 2008|10:51 am] |
Gallagher is coming to the Punchline.

"Hey! Did somebody order a pizza?"
From the Punchline website:
Gallagher performs other prop-food gags including a demonstration of constipation using a jar of Jif peanut butter and an explanation of the difference between men and women using a sausage wrapped in a banana peel.

Take sympathy on me, JUST TODAY my dad wished me a happy birthday... through MySpace. My birthday was April 29th. He said "Happy Birthday and two weeks!".
Oh such a pitiful, sad, rain-sodden life I live...
So how about a free Zune???

| For Sale: My Doepfer Modular |
[May. 13th, 2008|09:46 am] |
So.. I'm not really using my Doepfer modular much these days and am thinking about clearing it out to make room for other things. If you're interested, let me know (or if you know anyone who might be, point them my way). People around Seattle preferred, but I'll ship it, assuming you're willing to cover a very good packing job.
Everything is in excellent shape -- I recently checked through all the connections and everything's working fine. The one exception is a few small batz-maru stickers I added to a few modules for novelty. I'm probably looking for about 75% of new price, but I'd much rather sell this as a whole than have to deal with parting it out, so any reasonable offer will be considered. New price would be about $2700 for the case and all modules (not counting the AS modules, which don't seem to be available any more). Complete module list below the cut. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the modules (especially the analogue solutions modules, which are fairly rare).
I'm not parting it out yet, though if you're interested in multiple modules you can make an offer.

Any of you guys interested in a free rolling rack? It's got a sloped top with something like 12U, and maybe 20U in the bottom. One caster is missing, but it's otherwise in fine shape. |

| Pho of Aurora |
[May. 13th, 2008|12:09 am] |
Pho of Aurora was the first stop on my pho tour and at the time I gave it a good review. I finally managed to get back there this weekend. I suspected that I had gotten more demanding in my reviews after the first few, so I was eager to go back and see what I thought -- plus it's not far from home and I wanted to know for sure if I have a quality neighborhood pho joint. alas, my fears were confirmed; this time I found the broth unmemorable, somewhere at the mid-to-low end of the "pretty good" that most places scored. the meat was uninspired as well. now maybe they're just inconsistent, but I figure there's a good chance I overrated them on my first trip.
all of which leaves me without a really good neighborhood choice. I guess both Tic Tac and Vietnam are not too far away, though it's too bad there's no decent place right nearby, or at least along this strip of Aurora; I was hoping to be able to flash some 99 pride, but so far no deal. |

| Uncovered |
[May. 12th, 2008|11:58 pm] |
Uncovered is an utterly pointless movie, a complete waste of time, unless you want to get a good long look at kate beckinsale's boobs. I can't remember what inspired me to netflix it, but it really just was not very good. it wasn't so much awful as just.. what's the point. kate looks very very young, and wears weird unflattering clothes, and everything looks and sounds very early 90s. lots of things in the movie just seem odd and out of place, from the irish chess-playing hippie, to the peculiar bug-eyed inspector, to john wood's creepy turn as kate's guardian. spoiler: and honestly, that john wood ends up being the murderer was both a complete non surprise and completely unexplained. yes, he has a creepy fatherish obsession with kate, but why? it just makes no real sense, and the ending completely fails to surprise, grip, or satisfy. seriously, skip it (not, I'm sure, that you were considering seeing it or had even heard of it); if you're that mad to see kate's boobs, try the internet. |
